Sharjah Lights Up Street Lamps With Solar Power

The vision of Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) to transform Sharjah into one of the smartest cities in the world with sustainable development has got a shot in the arm with the installation of solar street lights in a major stretch of the city’s outskirts.

Sewa’s Chairman Eng Dr Rashid Alleem has entrusted the installation work in Al Sajaa Industrial Area, Al Barashi, Al Zubair, Bateah to Maliha Road and Al Mahathab, with ‘Solar Street Lights’ to Paradigm Pioneers Group under their wing Biztech.

Dr Mohammad Tariq, Group Chairman, Paradigm Pioneers Group, recognising the potential of the energy sector and internalising it within the UAE, explained why solar power was so important for this part of the world.

“Solar power is infinite and in abundance within the UAE, making it the most powerful resource available. By incorporating the use of solar panels, and utilising a natural resource, Biztech International FZE is providing yet another innovative solution and expanding the horizon of sustainability within the region by creating a better today for a greater tomorrow,” he said.

According to the 2015 UAE State of Energy Report, in 2010 the UAE produced just under 20 tonnes of CO2 emissions per person, a 63 per cent increase from year 2000.

There has been a slow and steady rise in environmental awareness, and with the forthcoming Expo 2020 having sustainability as one of their key themes, the UAE is shifting gears by encouraging green initiatives.

Paradigm Pioneers Group has commissioned, as entrusted by Sewa, the responsibility of breathing life into all these areas lying on the outskirts of Sharjah with 600 poles with 1,200 solar panels over an estimated 18-20 km area.

In comparison to electrical energy, solar panels require a simple installation by technicians. The panels are made up of photovoltaic cells, which convert sunlight into direct current (DC) throughout the day, and an inverter converting it to AC to be used in the lighting.

With future plans of more economic and ecofriendly infrastructures to be implemented within various units of the company, Biztech International FZE is working on proposals by commercial and residential projects which will improve the quality of life within the region, he added.

One of their noteworthy projects among many is the first green building to be constructed in Sharjah.
